Chapter Thirteen
Wells
I stood at the door and watched Leo descend the steps, then trot down the path and out to the sidewalk.
I couldn’t decide whether I should kill her or kiss her.
She’d been all too pleased with herself for interrupting me and her oldest brother, and I certainly hadn’t felt grateful at the time.
But as my heart rate slowed and my mind cleared away the fog that kissing Liam created every time, I saw the wisdom in slowing down a bit.
In the end, we were just getting to know each other. We knew we wanted each other, yes. In fact, it felt like every time we saw one another, a burst of cosmic chemistry poured out in the room where we both stood.
I thought about him constantly. I wanted to be near him all the time. I wanted to be under him, on top of him, with him.
At some point in the last few weeks, he’d worked his way into my brain, and no way was he getting out. And that was fine… becoming increasingly, more and more, something I might even call good.
But what scared me most was waking up and finding myself in the same boat I’d been in this time last year and the year before that. Logically, I knew Liam was nothing like Preston. A strong personality, yes, but not a manipulative abuser with no conscience or sense of honor.
Also, I’d never been certain whether Preston was even capable of love. I’d thought he’d cared for me in his own way, and I’d tried to talk myself into loving him in the early months, but he’d never loved me.
I knew Liam loved. He loved his family. He loved friends. He loved the mountains and the town and so many things, I couldn’t help but wonder what it might be like to have him love me.
I wandered back to the room, happier than usual that Tala wasn’t due until our guests arrived later today.
Liam stood tall at the window, looking out over the street and up toward the peak you could just see if you looked due east. He was tall, broad-shouldered, fit, and I felt his pull like he’d tied a rope around my waist.
I approached, and he turned when he heard me.
“She manage to find her way to the door?” he asked, a sardonic brow raised at the silly question.
“Of course,” I said, wanting to touch him, but knowing that would only lead to us trying out the linens on the new bed.
I’d left the door open just to check myself. His eyes flicked up to note the open door, then back to me.
“I should probably go.” A small smile graced his perfect, delectable lips.
I nodded once. “You probably should.”
“Walk me out?” he asked, waggling his fingers in my direction, then taking my hand when I held it out to him.
We walked silently, each of us holding our thoughts in. I was both glad and frustrated by this.
He stopped at the door, grabbed his jacket, and pulled it on, the look on his face a tick shy of devastating.
